Mr. Stott is the excitable householder next door to Mayfield, forever spoiling for a fight and nostalgic about the days when men settled things with their fists. His bluster collides with real danger when he stumbles into a burning house and finds himself rescuing a handcuffed stranger rather than landing the punch he craves. Comic, brave, and utterly unguarded, he turns a night of arson and murder into something almost farcical, and his impulsive heroics nudge the investigation forward at a moment when the professionals are still catching up.
