# Basil Grant — The Club of Queer Trades character guide > Basil Grant in The Club of Queer Trades by G. K. Chesterton. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Grant, Professor Chadd, Chadd, the immovable Chadd **First appearance:** 0000-i-the-tremendous-adventures-of-major-brown ## Snapshot A retired judge who traded the bench for a Lambeth garret, Basil Grant solves crimes by mysticism and moral insight rather than evidence. ## Who they are Basil lives among swords, armour, and fantastic books in a garret above the slums, welcoming any human face but needing none. His brother Rupert dismisses him as a dreamer, yet Basil's legal mind and unsettling habit of seeing straight into souls make him the quiet engine behind every case. His refusal to accept the obvious explanation is what keeps the Club of Queer Trades from remaining merely a puzzle. ## Relationships ### [Rupert Grant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/rupert_grant) _family_ Basil and Rupert are brothers, with Basil often acting as the eccentric, wise older sibling and Rupert as the more conventional, baffled younger brother. ### [Mr. Bingham](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/mr_bingham) _professional_ Mr. Bingham is a client or associate of Basil Grant, involved in one of the queer trades. ### [Burrows](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/burrows) _professional_ Burrows is a member of the Club of Queer Trades and interacts with Basil Grant in a professional capacity. ### [Major Brown](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/major_brown) _friendship_ Basil Grant and Major Brown are friends and fellow members of the Club of Queer Trades, with Basil helping to solve Major Brown's strange case. ### [Lord Beaumont](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/lord_beaumont) _social_ Lord Beaumont is an acquaintance of Basil Grant, involved in the social circles of the stories. ### [Dr. Colman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/dr_colman) _professional_ Dr. Colman is a fellow member of the Club of Queer Trades, interacting with Basil Grant in a professional context. ### [Captain Fraser](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_club_of_queer_trades_se/characters/captain_fraser) _professional_ Captain Fraser is a member of the Club of Queer Trades, interacting with Basil Grant professionally. ### [P.
