> Mrs. Evitt in The Cloven Foot by M. E. Braddon.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mrs., Evitt, Jane Sophia Evitt

**First appearance:** 0021-xxii-a-village-iago

## Snapshot

A lodging-house landlady with a furred tongue and a superstitious dread of upstairs rooms, Mrs. Evitt knows more about her tenants than she lets on.

## Who they are

Mrs. Evitt, whom Gerard calls Mrs. Bouncer, keeps the house where La Chicot died and where Desrolles once lodged. Ill with ague and terrified of sleeping near the dead woman's room, she still manages to gossip and to summon her stepdaughter Jemima for help. Her fear of the upstairs rooms and her intimate knowledge of the household make her a reluctant witness to the secrets the house contains.
