  1. Chapter 1

I: In Search of a Mission

On her twenty-fifth birthday, Rachel Curtis resolves to end her submissive girlhood and seek a meaningful vocation. She reluctantly accepts her mother's gift of a white rose wreath, symbolizing girlish innocence, while inwardly rebelling against such trappings. Her cousin Fanny Temple arrives from abroad with her large family, and Rachel is struck by the overwhelming responsibility of helping her. The chapter also introduces the Williams sisters, whom Rachel dismisses as 'Touchett's pets,' and discusses the local church situation, highlighting Rachel's critical and independent spirit.

  2. Chapter 2

    II: Rachel's Discipline

Rachel takes Fanny's sons for a walk along the cliffs, where they get into a fight with local boys over a lobster-pot. Rachel intervenes, but the boys continue to misbehave, including threatening a thrush's nest. Later, Fanny returns to apologize for her earlier defensiveness about Conrade's innocence, though she remains convinced of his good behavior. The chapter explores Fanny's past, her dependence on others, and Rachel's struggles with discipline and responsibility.

  3. Chapter 3

    III: Mackarel Lane

Rachel Curtis, accompanied by her sister Grace, visits the Williams sisters in Mackarel Lane to assess them without committing Fanny. She meets the invalid Ermine Williams, who impresses her with her intellect and charm, and her sister Alison, a governess. Rachel becomes a frequent visitor, engaging in stimulating conversations with Ermine, though she finds Alison reserved. The chapter also details Rachel's conflicts with Mr. Touchett over choir practices and her observations on the Williams' household.

  4. Chapter 4

    IV: The Hero

The chapter opens with Alison Williams anxiously awaiting the arrival of Colonel Keith, the 'Major' who is a close family friend of the Temples. Rachel Curtis, disapproving of the military influence, accompanies Alison to Myrtlewood, where they learn Lady Temple has gone to meet him. Alison, secretly fearing that this Colonel Keith may be the man from her sister Ermine's past, struggles with her anxiety while caring for the children. When the Colonel finally arrives with a young officer, Rachel is immediately antagonistic, while Alison is relieved to discover he is not the man she feared. The chapter highlights the sisters' private conversation about Alison's fears, Rachel's bluntness, and the family's warm welcome for the Colonel.

  5. Chapter 5

    V: Military Society

Rachel Curtis presses Ermine Williams for information about the newly arrived Major Keith, who is revealed to be Colonel Keith, brother to Lord Keith of Gowanbrae. Rachel is suspicious of his influence over Fanny Temple and criticizes the military set. Meanwhile, Colonel Keith visits Fanny, who is overjoyed to see him and discusses keeping Alison Williams as a governess. He then goes to see Ermine, and they have a long-awaited, emotional reunion, revealing their deep connection and the sacrifices they have made for each other.
