## Who they are

Count Pateroff is a member of the Travellers', a man of uncertain age and easy English manners whose light blue eyes carry a restlessness that belies his composure. He meets Harry at the Beaufort on Lady Ongar's behalf, and Harry, nervous and inexperienced, cannot find the words to raise her name. His ambiguous errand matters because it draws Harry deeper into Julia's orbit and raises the question of what hold the count and his sister Sophie truly have over Lady Ongar's past.
