## Who they are

Polperro keeps the Hôtel de l'Horloge running with brisk good humor, and his wife's absence leaves him even busier and more flustered than usual. When Chester arrives out of the night with no luggage and asks pointedly for the room the Comte de Virieu occupied, the little chef's cheerful competence gives way to wary hesitation. His small evasions and watchful manner make him more than mere comic relief — he is a keeper of the hotel's secrets, and his discomfort signals that something in his tidy establishment does not bear close questioning.
