# Monsieur Wachner — The Chink in the Armour character guide

> Monsieur Wachner in The Chink in the Armour by Marie Belloc Lowndes.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Wachner, the Wachner, Fritz Wachner, Fritz

**First appearance:** 0001-the-chink-in-the-armour

## Snapshot

The husband in the enigmatic Wachner pair, a man whose easy continental manners and watchful presence keep Sylvia guessing at what lies beneath.

## Who they are

Monsieur Wachner belongs to the ambiguous foreign couple whose friendship Sylvia accepts without much scrutiny, part of the Lacville set that surrounds her. His geniality and his wife's attentions feel flattering rather than alarming, which is precisely what makes the pair so effective at getting close. His true nature is the slow reveal the novel builds toward, and every early kindness he shows Sylvia reads differently in hindsight.
