## Snapshot

A Montmartre fortune-teller whose pink card and five-franc consultations draw Sylvia in with promises the devil supposedly keeps no secrets from.

## Who they are

Madame Cagliostra is the seer whose visiting-card arrives unbidden on Sylvia's Paris table, a name the chambermaid vouches for as marvellous and cheap. She charges only five francs, yet her clients are said to include the well-known, and her readings carry a weight Sylvia cannot quite dismiss. She is the novel's first whisper of fate and fraud, the small pink card that sets the heroine walking toward danger.
