# Captain Bliss — The Chinese Parrot character guide

> Captain Bliss in The Chinese Parrot by Earl Derr Biggers.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bliss, this Captain Bliss, stupid Captain Bliss

**First appearance:** 0009-x-bliss-of-the-homicide-squad

## Snapshot

The local police captain, a plodding official whose confidence far outstrips his competence, forever a step behind the sharper minds around him.

## Who they are

Captain Bliss represents the official machinery of justice in the desert community, and he approaches the case with a self-assurance that Charlie Chan quietly finds laughable. His instinct is to seize the obvious explanation and close the matter, which puts him at odds with the patient, methodical detective from the Islands. His blundering presence raises the stakes for Chan and Eden, who must work around him while the real truth stays buried.
