## Who they are

Varya is the adopted daughter who keeps the keys, counts the kopecks, and watches the arrears on the mortgage with clear eyes while everyone else drifts. Everyone congratulates her on a marriage to Lopahin that exists only as rumor; she weeps, shakes her fist at him, and admits it is all like a dream. Her longing to hand Anya off to a rich man and then walk from holy place to holy place is both devotion and escape — and her practical grief is the counterweight to Lyubov's beautiful helplessness.
