## Who they are

Petya has been drifting through this house for years — the tutor who stayed, the 'perpetual student' everyone teases and half-respects. He speaks in sweeping declarations about work, the future, and the shame of the old order, and he is the one voice that refuses nostalgia for the orchard. His friendship with Anya is the play's most hopeful thread, and also its most suspect: he talks beautifully about a new world while doing nothing to build it, and the gap between his words and his life is the quiet joke under the idealism.
