# Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya — The Cherry Orchard character guide

> Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Lyubov, Madame Ranevsky, Lyuba

**First appearance:** 0001-the-cherry-orchard

## Snapshot

Returning from Paris after five years, she steps back into the nursery she abandoned, trailing debts, tenderness, and a habit of giving rubles she doesn't have.

## Who they are

Lyubov Andreyevna owns the estate whose cherry orchard everyone is quietly calculating against, and she arrives home to a house full of people who remember her kindness and her ruin. Her generosity is genuine and reckless — expensive dinners, whole rubles to waiters — and it sits uneasily beside the mortgage nobody can pay. She is the emotional center the others orbit, and her refusal to face the auction is what makes the orchard's fate feel like a verdict on her whole way of living.
