Epihodov is the estate's walking disaster, forever knocking over furniture and announcing his own tragic significance to anyone within earshot. He reads books he cannot understand, loves Dunyasha in a way that is mostly performance, and cannot decide whether to live or shoot himself. His comic self-importance sharpens the play's larger theme: people who mistake their confusion for destiny while the ground shifts under them.
