# Dr. Cyprian Baseverie — The Charing Cross Mystery character guide

> Dr. Cyprian Baseverie in The Charing Cross Mystery by J. S. Fletcher.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dr. Baseverie, Baseverie

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-last-train-east

## Snapshot

A smooth-tongued, vaguely menacing visitor whose repeated calls on Lady Riversreade are pretext, not charity, and whose true business no one can name.

## Who they are

Dr. Cyprian Baseverie presents himself as a caller interested in the Home and its patients, but he never sees either; he sees only Lady Riversreade, and only behind closed doors. Rhona finds him florid, ingratiating, and distinctly unpleasant, and Major Penteney arranges a trap for him in the private office. His evasiveness, his unknown address, and his habit of appearing at Vivian's nightclub make him the case's most slippery and dangerous figure.
