## Who they are

Pierrette arrives in Provins as a trusting girl of nearly fourteen, still dreaming of the hamlet of Pen-Hoël and the boy Jacques Brigaut who once rowed her across a pond. Her aunt Sylvie and uncle Rogron resent every franc spent on her, and their petty tyranny slowly grinds her down. Her helplessness exposes the moral rot hidden beneath provincial respectability, and her fate becomes the moral center of the novel's darkest thread.
