## Who they are

Jean-Jacques Rouget is the son of the notorious Doctor Rouget, a man so stupid and so coddled that he never learned to respect his mother or manage his own affairs. His father kept him unmarried for reasons the story will unfold, and his passivity leaves him entirely in the hands of his servant Flore. He is the still, dull center around which the ambitions of Issoudun turn.
