## Who they are

Jacques Brigaut is a poor Breton youth, Pierrette Lorrain's childhood companion from the hamlet of Pen-Hoël, whose blue jacket and furze branch she recognizes from her window. His love is patient and heroic in its simplicity, and his arrival in Provins becomes the one bright event in her imprisoned days. He represents the loyalty and warmth that the Bachelors' household has stripped from her life.
