## Who they are

Desroches is the attorney the Bridau family turns to when money and inheritance turn into battlegrounds, a man whose harsh realism cuts through both sentiment and self-deception. He matters because the novel's conflicts repeatedly come down to law and money, and Desroches is the instrument by which Balzac shows how justice is bought, delayed, and survived in post-Napoleonic France.
