## Who they are

Momus conducts the protocol interview in which K. is finally granted a channel toward the Castle, and he does so with the bland, self-important courtesy of a man who knows his function outranks his person. He commands K. 'in the name of Klamm,' yet admits he has no information about whether Klamm troubles himself with K.'s affairs at all. His interrogation is the closest K. comes to official contact — and it shows how the Castle's kindness and its obstruction are administered by the same hand.
