K. arrives late at night in a snow-covered village near the Castle. He finds lodging at the inn, but is soon awakened by Schwarzer, the Castellan's son, who demands a permit to stay. K. claims to be the Land Surveyor summoned by the Count. After a telephone call to the Castle, his claim is confirmed. The next morning, K. explores the village, observes the Castle from a distance, and has a brief, tense conversation with the schoolteacher, who warns him that strangers never like the Castle. K. feels increasingly weary and disoriented as he tries to find his way.
Chapter 4

K. receives a letter from the Castle that presents contradictory signals, treating him both as a free man and a minor employee. He decides to become a village worker to gain access to the Castle. He follows Barnabas, hoping to be led to the Castle, but instead is taken to Barnabas's home, where he meets his family. K. feels deceived and disillusioned, realizing Barnabas is merely a messenger, not a privileged Castle insider.
Chapter 5
III
K. wakes in the inn with Frieda, who reveals she is Klamm's mistress. They become lovers, and K. feels both happiness and foreboding. The assistants intrude, and K. struggles with the consequences of his actions.
