**Also known as:** Presbury, Professor Presbury of Camford

**First appearance:** 0009-the-adventure-of-the-creeping-man

## Snapshot

A celebrated Camford scientist of sixty-one whose late-life engagement and sudden secret journeys have turned a disciplined academic into a man his own household barely recognizes.

## Who they are

Presbury is a widower of European reputation, combative and exacting, now infatuated with a woman young enough to be his daughter and engaged to be married against his family's quiet disapproval. After a fortnight's unexplained absence abroad, his behavior turns erratic in ways his assistant and future son-in-law cannot ignore. The tension between his formidable intellect and his unraveling self is the engine of the mystery, and the question of what he brought home from Prague hangs over every scene.
