## Snapshot

The Gold King, an American mining magnate whose colossal wealth and volcanic temper make him the most feared — and most watched — man in his corner of England.

## Who they are

Gibson has risen from nothing to command a fortune in gold, and he carries the habits of the frontier into English drawing rooms: blunt speech, sudden rages, and an impatience with anyone who cannot match his intensity. When a woman connected to his household is found dead, his wealth and his temper make him the obvious suspect, and he summons Holmes not as a supplicant but as a man accustomed to buying outcomes. His case forces Holmes to weigh the difference between a man capable of violence and a man actually guilty of it.
