Chapter 2
The Adventure of the Illustrious Client
Holmes and Watson are consulted by Sir James Damery to prevent the marriage of Baron Adelbert Gruner, a dangerous Austrian murderer, to Miss Violet de Merville. Despite Gruner's charm and the lady's stubborn devotion, Holmes employs Shinwell Johnson to gather underworld intelligence, confronts Gruner directly, and ultimately uses a damning book from Gruner's past, delivered via Sir James, to break the engagement. The chapter concludes with the marriage called off and Kitty Winter's vitriol-throwing case receiving a lenient sentence.
Chapter 3
The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier
Holmes recounts a case from January 1903, after Watson's marriage, when he is visited by James M. Dodd, a veteran of the Boer War. Dodd seeks his friend Godfrey Emsworth, who vanished after being wounded in the war. Dodd's investigation at Tuxbury Old Park reveals strange behavior from Godfrey's father, Colonel Emsworth, and a mysterious locked lodge in the garden where a small bearded man is seen. Dodd's nocturnal observation of the lodge sets the stage for a bizarre mystery.
Chapter 4
The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone
Dr. Watson visits Baker Street and finds Holmes deeply engaged in the case of the stolen Crown diamond, the Mazarin Stone. Holmes has been in disguise, tracking Count Sylvius, the prime suspect. Using a wax dummy to deceive the Count, Holmes confronts him and reveals his knowledge of the crime, though the stone's location remains unknown. Watson is sent to fetch the police as Holmes continues his dangerous game.
Chapter 5
The Adventure of the Three Gables
Holmes and Watson are visited by the menacing Steve Dixie, a thug sent to intimidate Holmes away from a case in Harrow Weald. Undeterred, Holmes investigates the strange occurrences at Three Gables, the home of Mrs. Maberley. She reveals that a mysterious buyer has offered an exorbitant price for her house and furniture, and that her son Douglas Maberley recently died in Rome after a broken heart. Holmes uncovers that the buyer is a woman who had a relationship with Douglas and is trying to suppress a manuscript he wrote about their affair. The woman, who hired Barney Stockdale and his gang to burgle the house, ultimately burns the manuscript, but Holmes implies she will face consequences.
