## Snapshot

Meliboeus's wise wife, who lets her husband weep his fill before gently steering him from vengeance toward forgiveness and true counsel.

## Who they are

Dame Prudence is the wife of the wealthy Meliboeus, whose home has been violated and daughter wounded by his old enemies. While he rages and calls for war, she draws on Seneca, Ovid, and Scripture to argue that outrageous grief is folly and that a wise man governs by counsel, not fury. Her long, patient rebuttal of his every argument is the tale's real drama — a medieval marriage debate staged as a rescue from self-destruction.
