# Arcite — The Canterbury Tales character guide

> Arcite in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** false Arcite, Dan Arcite, This Arcite

**First appearance:** 0001-the-knight-s-tale

## Snapshot

Palamon's loyal cousin and fellow prisoner, whose attempt to console his friend turns into rivalry the moment he too beholds Emily in the garden.

## Who they are

Arcite shares Palamon's Theban blood and his chains in Theseus's tower, offering stoic comfort about fortune and fate. But the same window that wounds Palamon wounds him, and the cousins' bond fractures into a bitter contest over the same woman. His predicament—honor-bound to his kin yet consumed by love—makes him the tale's most anguished figure, caught between sworn brotherhood and uncontrollable desire.
