Buck, a powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd mix, lives a comfortable life as the undisputed ruler of Judge Miller's estate in California's Santa Clara Valley. Unbeknownst to him, the Klondike Gold Rush has created a massive demand for strong sled dogs. Manuel, a gardener's helper with a gambling addiction, kidnaps Buck and sells him. Buck is shipped north, enduring brutal treatment and starvation in a crate. In Seattle, a man in a red sweater beats him with a club, teaching him the law of the club. Buck is then sold to Perrault and François, Canadian government couriers, who take him aboard the ship Narwhal to begin his new life in the North.
Chapter 4
II: The Law of Club and Fang
Buck experiences his first brutal day in the North, witnessing the savage death of Curly at the paws of a husky pack, learning the law of club and fang. He is harnessed to a sled, trained by François, Dave, and Spitz, and adapts to the harsh environment, including learning to sleep in a snow hole. The chapter establishes the primitive, merciless world Buck must navigate.
Chapter 5
III: The Dominant Primordial Beast
Buck's primordial instincts strengthen as he adapts to the brutal trail life, avoiding open conflict with Spitz until Spitz steals his nest. Their fight is interrupted by a pack of starving huskies that ravage the camp. Later, Buck and Spitz engage in a final, savage battle, where Buck's cunning and imagination allow him to break Spitz's legs and kill him, emerging as the dominant beast.
