# Alyosha Karamazov — The Brothers Karamazov character guide > Alyosha Karamazov in The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Alyosha, Alexey Fyodorovitch, Alexey, little Alexey **First appearance:** 0001-the-brothers-karamazov ## Snapshot The youngest Karamazov, a novice monk whose gentle faith makes him the confidant everyone confesses to and no one quite spares. ## Who they are Alyosha moves between the monastery, his father's house, and the drawing rooms of women half in love with him, carrying messages and absorbing other people's feverish secrets. His gift is a soft answer that disarms — he tells Katerina Ivanovna she will testify honorably and means it — yet that same openness leaves him trailing after Ivan through the streets, unsure whether he is following a brother or an illness. He matters because the novel's quarrels keep funneling through him: whoever wants to be understood comes to Alyosha first. ## Relationships ### [Ivan Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/ivan_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha deeply loves his intellectual brother Ivan but is troubled by Ivan's nihilism and rejection of faith. ### [Dmitri Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/dmitri_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha is a compassionate and loyal brother to the impulsive Dmitri, often acting as his moral anchor. ### [Katerina Ivanovna](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/katerina_ivanovna) _friendship_ Alyosha is a sympathetic confidant to the proud and suffering Katerina, trying to mediate her turbulent emotions. ### [Lise Hohlakov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/lise_hohlakov) _romantic_ Lise is a capricious young woman who flirts with Alyosha and proposes marriage, though her feelings are unstable and childish. ### [Grushenka](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/grushenka) _friendship_ Alyosha shows Grushenka genuine kindness and spiritual understanding, helping to soften her heart and redeem her character. ### [Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/fyodor_pavlovitch_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha feels pity and a sense of duty toward his debauched father, but Fyodor mostly ignores or mocks him. ### [Kolya Krassotkin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/kolya_krassotkin) _friendship_ Alyosha becomes a kind mentor to the precocious and rebellious schoolboy Kolya, guiding him toward humility and faith. ### [Ivan Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/ivan_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha deeply loves his intellectual brother Ivan but is troubled by Ivan's nihilism and rejection of faith. ### [Dmitri Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/dmitri_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha is a compassionate and loyal brother to the impulsive Dmitri, often acting as his moral anchor. ### [Ivan Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/ivan_karamazov) _family_ Alyosha deeply loves his intellectual brother Ivan but is troubled by Ivan's nihilism and rejection of faith. ### [Katerina Ivanovna](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/katerina_ivanovna) _friendship_ Alyosha is a sympathetic confidant to the proud and suffering Katerina, trying to mediate her turbulent emotions. ### [Katerina Ivanovna](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/characters/katerina_ivanovna) _friendship_ Alyosha is a sympathetic confidant to the proud and suffering Katerina, trying to mediate her turbulent emotions. ## In the story ### [Part I](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/chapters/the-brothers-karamazov) The youngest son, a novice monk known for his gentle and spiritual nature. ### [Book I: The History of a Family](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/chapters/part-i-book-i-the-history-of-a-family) The youngest son, described as 'prematurely charitable,' who becomes a novice under Elder Zossima. ### [Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/chapters/part-i-i-fyodor-pavlovitch-karamazov) Fyodor's third son, introduced as Alexey Fyodorovitch Karamazov, the protagonist of the narrative. ### [III: The Second Marriage and the Second Family](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_brothers_karamazov_se/chapters/part-i-iii-the-second-marriage-and-the-second-family) The younger son from the second marriage, remembered his mother as a dream;
