> Sir John Bunnery in The Brooklyn Murders by G. D. H. Cole.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Sir John, Bunnery, John Bunnery

**First appearance:** 0000-i-a-family-celebration

## Snapshot

A family friend and magistrate whose legal instincts and quiet inquiries into the servants' quarrels give the investigation an unexpected turn.

## Who they are

Sir John Bunnery moves through the case with the ease of a man who knows the Brooklyn household from the inside, and it is his information about the butler Winter's quarrel with Prinsep that opens a new line of inquiry. He is not a detective but a magistrate and a friend, and his willingness to share what he has learned for the defence shows a pragmatism that sits oddly with his social position. His presence reminds the reader that in a case like this, the law and the family are never quite separable.
