# How does The Bridge of San Luis Rey develop the theme of Isolation and Connection?

> The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder

## Answer

The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder develops Isolation and Connection across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Many characters live in profound isolation (the Marquesa's loneliness, the twins' secret language) yet yearn for connection, which is fleetingly achieved through acts of love, art, or shared humanity before the bridge severs all ties.

The Marquesa lives in profound isolation despite her wealth, seeking connection through letters and the companionship of Pepita, while the Abbess strives to connect women in a fragmented society.

The twins' profound, silent bond isolates them from the world, yet their unity is threatened by Manuel's love for the Perichole.

Despite his many acquaintances, Uncle Pio is lonely and proud in his solitude; his connection with Camila and the Viceroy provides rare intimacy.
