# How does The Bridge of San Luis Rey develop the theme of Divine Providence vs. Randomness?

> The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder

## Answer

The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder develops Divine Providence vs. Randomness across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The central question of whether the bridge collapse was an act of God with a hidden purpose or a meaningless accident, explored through Brother Juniper's failed attempt to prove a divine plan and the novel's ambiguous conclusion.

Brother Juniper's quest to prove the collapse is an act of God rather than chance introduces the central tension between faith in divine order and the apparent randomness of tragedy.

Brother Juniper's quest to prove that the collapse was a deliberate act of God, not mere chance, drives the chapter's central conflict.

Brother Juniper's statistical attempt to prove divine order fails, and he is executed; Camila sees the bridge collapse as a divine message, while the Captain calls the service false.
