# Esteban — The Bridge of San Luis Rey character guide

> Esteban in The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0001-the-bridge-of-san-luis-rey

## Snapshot

One of identical twins whose seamless devotion to his brother cracks when a woman's attention divides them.

## Who they are

Esteban and Manuel have lived as a single soul, writing letters for the illiterate and sharing every hour, until Manuel's private passion for the Perichole opens a distance Esteban cannot name. Simpler in heart than his brother, he discovers the unbearable arithmetic of love — that one always loves less — and sits by a guttering candle wondering why the whole meaning has gone out of their life. His grief over this fracture makes him one of the story's most exposed and human figures.
