# Brother Juniper — The Bridge of San Luis Rey character guide

> Brother Juniper in The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0002-part-one-perhaps-an-accident

## Snapshot

A Franciscan monk whose cheerful faith is so absolute that he tries to prove God's purpose mathematically, tabulating souls after the bridge collapse.

## Who they are

Brother Juniper moves through Lima as a gentle, slightly comic figure, gathering testimony about the five travelers who died at San Luis Rey. A skeptical friend at the university has spent years needling his belief with anecdotes of unanswered prayer, and the pestilence in his home village of Puerto left him secretly comparing the worth of the dead against the living. His stubborn, tender project to demonstrate that the accident was divine intention is what turns a local tragedy into the book's central inquiry.
