Chapter 1
Part I: Jörundgaard
The chapter introduces the Lavrans family at their estate Jörundgaard, focusing on the deep bond between Kristin and her father Lavrans, the tragic accident that cripples her sister Ulvhild, and the family's grief and search for healing. Lady Aashild's arrival brings hope but also tension, and the chapter closes with Kristin's betrothal to Simon Andressön, setting the stage for her future conflicts.

Kristin returns home to Jörundgaard in the spring, tormented by her secret love for Erlend and her pregnancy. Her mother Ragnfrid confronts her about her behavior, revealing that Lavrans knows of Erlend's improper wooing and is fiercely opposed. The chapter culminates on St. John's Eve, where the family hosts the poor, including the old bedesman Haakon, while Kristin's inner turmoil and longing for Erlend grow unbearable.

Lavrans confronts Kristin about her love for Erlend Nikulaussön, revealing his knowledge of Erlend's past adultery and illegitimate children. Kristin pleads with him, but Lavrans remains firm, though Ragnfrid warns that forcing Kristin to forget Erlend may lead to great misfortune. Lavrans also informs Kristin that Simon Andressön has become betrothed to another woman.
Chapter 4

Kristin, Erlend, and Lady Aashild plan and execute Kristin's flight from Jörundgaard to escape her betrothal to Simon. After a tense journey, they arrive at Haugen, where Kristin takes charge of the escape route and provisions. Lady Aashild reluctantly agrees to help, but the chapter culminates in a crisis: Eline Ormsdatter, Erlend's former mistress, commits suicide, forcing the group to cover up her death to protect Kristin and Erlend's future.
Chapter 5
IV
Kristin struggles with her secret relationship with Erlend while her family faces hardship, including Ulvhild's declining health. Lavrans shows his love and pain, and Kristin reflects on her sin and the impossibility of absolution. The chapter ends with Lavrans receiving a letter from Sir Munan Baardsön.
