## Who they are

Herr von Werben is the proud father of Elsa and Ottomar, a man whose name alone is enough to provoke an old antagonist into imaginary battles he never actually fights. Ferdinanda notes that if her father ever met him face to face, he would be courtesy itself, and that the station scene was only a shadow cast by nervousness. His stiffness and the social friction around him make the Werben household a charged space in the novel's early chapters.
