Concepts
Ideas that structure The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzō — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Teaism as an Aesthetic Philosophy
The book presents Teaism as a comprehensive philosophy that elevates tea-drinking into a religion of aestheticism, emphasizing purity, harmony, and the worship of the imperfect in everyday life.
East vs. West Cultural Misunderstanding
Okakura critiques Western perceptions of the East as quaint or barbaric, arguing that the West fails to understand Eastern art and spirituality, while advocating for mutual respect and learning between civilizations.
Simplicity and Humility
The tea ceremony and Teaism promote simplicity, refined poverty, and humility as virtues, seen in the tearoom's design, the garden path (roji), and the requirement for guests to bow and enter through a low door.
Art Appreciation and Individuality
True art appreciation requires personal sympathy and humility before the masterpiece, rejecting mere fashion or cost; the tea-masters valued objects that spoke to them individually rather than catering to popular taste.
Influence of Taoism and Zennism
Taoist and Zen philosophies deeply inform Teaism, emphasizing the relativity of good and evil, the beauty of impermanence, and the art of living through constant readjustment to the present moment.
The Worship of the Imperfect and Transience
Teaism is described as a 'worship of the Imperfect,' finding beauty in impermanence and incompleteness, as illustrated by the tea-masters' appreciation for aged objects, natural decay, and the fleeting nature of flowers.
Tea Masters as Cultural Innovators
Tea-masters like Rikiu and Kobori-Enshiu revolutionized Japanese art, architecture, gardens, pottery, and daily life, teaching simplicity, humility, and the integration of beauty into all domestic details.
Critique of Modern Materialism and Conformity
The book criticizes modern society for valuing cost over refinement, fashion over beauty, and for confusing art with archaeology, lamenting the loss of genuine appreciation in favor of industrialism and commercialism.
