First appearance: Tea-Masters
As a supporting figure in The Book of Tea, Kobori Enshiu is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Mentioned as a tea-master who sought a different effect for the roji, evoking a newly awakened soul lingering in shadowy dreams.
Enshiu belongs to the lineage of tea masters who shaped the ceremony and the spaces that house it, and his name is invoked whenever the book speaks of gardens that achieve the natural without seeming designed. His art lies in the tension between profound forethought and the appearance of refined poverty—the same paradox that defines the tearoom itself. He matters because he represents the moment when tea mastery extends beyond the cup into the landscape, making the garden path a preface to the ceremony.
