Chapter 1
Book I

Chapter 2
I: Where the Slush Lamp Burns
In the fo'cs'le of the Northumberland, the old sailor Paddy Button plays a fiddle tune and spins a yarn about a leprechaun his aunt kept in Connaught. The crew, a mix of seasoned sailors and greenhorns, listens as Button reflects on his life, his drinking, and his enduring belief in fairies despite decades at sea. The ship is becalmed after a brutal rounding of Cape Horn.
Chapter 3
II: Under the Stars
Arthur Lestrange, a consumptive passenger aboard the Northumberland, reflects on his impending death and his desire to shield his children, Dick and Emmeline, from the concept of death. He asks Captain Le Farge to dispose of his body without their knowledge. The chapter also introduces Emmeline's sleepwalking and her obsessive attachment to a mysterious box, which she frequently loses and searches for, often found by Paddy Button. The scene shifts to the serene yet majestic night sky, contrasting Lestrange's inner turmoil with the beauty of the stars.
Chapter 4
III: The Shadow and the Fire
On the fourth day of a long calm at sea, Lestrange and the children endure oppressive heat and monotony. After Dick spots sharks in the water, Lestrange is shaken by the contrast between beauty and terror. A fog bank appears, and a mysterious smell of burning leads to the discovery of smoke rising from the main hatch, revealing that the ship is on fire. Lestrange rushes to ensure the children's safety as the pumps begin to clank.
Chapter 5
IV: And Like a Dream Dissolved
The chapter depicts the frantic evacuation of the ship Northumberland as fire breaks out, with Captain Le Farge ordering the children and passengers into a dinghy rowed by Paddy Button. As they escape, a dense fog bank engulfs the ship, and the children, especially Emmeline, sense the looming danger and loss.
