## Snapshot

Abel's gentle, dying daughter, ruined in Deerwood's eyes by an unnamed baby and a locked secret, who finds in Valancy the first friend to stay.

## Who they are

Once a modest Sunday School worker everyone pitied, Cissy Gay returned from a Muskoka hotel with a baby and no explanation, and the town tore her reputation to pieces. Now dying of consumption in her father's disreputable house, she keeps her pale lips sealed about the father's name while women refuse to visit her. Her quiet need draws Valancy out of the Stirling parlor and into a life of real consequence, making Cissy the first person Valancy chooses to love without permission.
