# The Blue Bird — The Blue Bird character guide

> The Blue Bird in The Blue Bird by Maurice Maeterlinck.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Blue Bird, Blue-beard

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-woodcutter-s-cottage

## Snapshot

The radiant, uncatchable bird the children chase across realms of light and shadow, forever glimpsed, forever slipping through their fingers when touched.

## Who they are

The Blue Bird is the object of the entire journey, a creature that appears in the Light of the Poets and vanishes the instant anyone tries to grasp it. Light warns that only the very few who understand properly will know him when they see him, which makes him less a prize than a test of perception. He matters because everything the children do is measured against his absence, and because his elusiveness is the story's central question: where happiness actually lives.
