A sugary, over-eager companion whose flattery and sweetness curdle whenever danger nears, forever angling to be liked by whoever holds power.

## Who they are

Sugar travels with the children as one of the awakened household presences, all compliments and nervous smiles. His flaw is that his sweetness has no spine: he agrees with everyone and panics when courage is required. He matters because he shows how easily the search for happiness is confused with the wish to please, a temptation the children must learn to see through.
