# The Duchess of Newcastle — The Blazing World character guide

> The Duchess of Newcastle in The Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Duchess, the Duchess

**First appearance:** 0002-the-description-of-a-new-world-called-the-blazing-world

## Snapshot

The author's own self, drawn into the Blazing-World as the Empress's chosen friend and scribe, trading counsel and wit across two worlds.

## Who they are

Summoned by the Empress's longing for a companion from her own world, the Duchess arrives as confidante, co-ruler of the imagination, and the book's own authorial double. Their friendship is intimate and intellectual, a rare pairing of two women who build worlds together rather than compete for one. She matters because her presence turns the Empress's solitary empire into a dialogue about ambition, authorship, and what a woman may claim.
