Chapter 1
I
Sophie recalls the day her mother died, juxtaposed with her father Paul's ecstatic discovery of opal. The funeral procession across the plains is described, culminating in a burial beneath a coolebah tree where Snowshoes arrives singing a song Sophie's mother loved.
Chapter 2
II
Mrs. Rouminof's death quickly fades from Ridge memory as Paul and Sophie move in with Michael Brady. The chapter provides a detailed portrait of Michael, the community's unofficial caretaker, intellectual, and moral compass, and contrasts him with Jun Johnson, a plausible but distrusted figure. It also introduces Charley Heathfield and his son Potch, and recounts the Rouminof family's history on the Ridge.
Chapter 3

At Newton's bar, the men of Fallen Star Ridge gather to witness Jun Johnson display his and Paul Rouminof's opal finds. Suspicious that Jun is keeping the best stones for himself, the community pressures him to give Paul his fair share. Jun reluctantly complies, but the men later worry they may have done Paul a disservice, as he is likely to mishandle the sale. Paul, however, dreams of leaving the Ridge with Sophie for a new life in Sydney.

Chapter IV
Michael struggles with his promise to Marya Rouminof to keep Sophie on the Ridge, as Paul insists on taking her away. After a tense night, Michael resolves to prevent Sophie's departure and takes a morally ambiguous action involving a packet of opals to control the situation, while the community discusses Jun's influence and Paul's plans.
Chapter 5
V
Michael wanders the Ridge, burdened by the secret of Charley's theft and his own role in it. He grapples with the moral weight of his decision to save Sophie while protecting Paul's opals, feeling alienated from the community. Later, he finds Potch grieving Charley's departure and offers him a partnership, forming a new mateship.
