## Snapshot

A vivacious widow with a sharp eye and a kind heart, whose memories of a mysterious Englishman in Vienna become a key to the past.

## Who they are

Isabella Fanshawe, known to friends as Bel, keeps a tastefully appointed house in Mount Street and a reputation as an excellent hostess. When Richard Carstares comes calling to ask about the elusive Ferndale, she receives him alone and shares what she remembers of a reserved, homesick Englishman she met in Vienna years before. She matters because her recollections begin to fill in the shadowy history that haunts the novel's central mystery.
