# Frank Fortescue — The Black Moth character guide

> Frank Fortescue in The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fortescue

**First appearance:** 0007-vii-introducing-sundry-new-characters

## Snapshot

An austere patrician who joins Richard Carstares's midnight cavalcade through London's streets, lending quiet respectability to a man whose worries run deeper than fashion.

## Who they are

Sir John Fortescue moves through the fashionable world of routs and gilded chairs with the ease of a man some years senior to Richard Carstares yet counted among his closest friends. His presence at Lavinia's toilette and in the walking party beside her chair marks him as a fixture of the Carstares circle, steady where others are frivolous. He matters because his loyalty to Richard quietly anchors the early chapters, reminding readers that the honorable brother has allies even as his marriage frays.
