Darrell is the sort of young man who can stroll out of the Ritz and vanish eastward to a mysterious date with a minor star, then turn up again when the gang needs a steady hand. He shares Drummond's taste for understatement in a crisis, and his social ease gives the group access to rooms and conversations that rougher methods could not reach. His presence in the early chapters establishes the gang as a network of ordinary-seeming men rather than a single avenger.
