# Charles Latter — The Black Gang character guide

> Charles Latter in The Black Gang by H. C. McNeile.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Latter, Mr. Charles Latter, Mr. Latter, old Latter, poor old Latter

**First appearance:** 0004-v-in-which-charles-latter-m-p-goes-mad

## Snapshot

An unpleasant MP engaged in unpleasant work, who begs Scotland Yard for protection from the Black Gang and ends up mad instead.

## Who they are

Latter is the story's first casualty and its clearest warning: a man whose political respectability masks dirty business, and whose terror of the Gang is entirely earned. Drummond's account of the house-party that unhinged him is both a joke and a confession, delivered over lunch. His fate establishes what the Black Gang does and what Peterson's world costs its pawns.
