King of the gods, whose sacrifices and sovereignty the new bird-city quietly strangles until heaven itself must negotiate.

## Who they are

Zeus never walks the stage early, but his rule hangs over every joke: the birds' blockade intercepts the smoke of men's offerings, cutting the gods off from their dinners and their dignity. He is the absent landlord whose authority Pisthetaerus means to repossess, and the play's comedy depends on how petty and hungry the king of heaven becomes when his privileges are revoked. By the middle of the story, his envoys are already being sent—and already being outmaneuvered.
