Kaby arrives at the Place straight-armed on the divan, spine ridged with exhaustion, refusing Sid's hand and demanding wine while Ilhilihis bleeds beside her. She is Sid's 'sweet Keftian friend,' but the tenderness between them is all friction, and her temper runs hot enough to look daggers at anyone who pities her. Her arrival drags the war's cost into the room and sets the emotional temperature for the whole recuperation.
