Hercule Poirot faces his most formidable challenge yet—a global criminal syndicate known as the Big Four, whose members include a Chinese mastermind, an American millionaire, a French scientist, and a mysterious fourth figure. With his friend Hastings by his side, Poirot must use his intellect to unravel a web of murder, disguise, and scientific sabotage.
The story begins when a dying stranger stumbles into Poirot's flat, murmuring his address, before being murdered. Poirot and Hastings soon uncover a vast conspiracy led by four individuals: Li Chang Yen (the Chinese mastermind), Abe Ryland (the American millionaire), Madame Olivier (the French scientist), and an unknown fourth member. As they investigate a series of seemingly unrelated crimes—a scientist's disappearance, a poisoned curry, a chess match murder—Poirot realizes the Big Four are using advanced science and impersonation to destabilize the world. Hastings infiltrates Ryland's household, and Poirot stages his own death to go underground. With the help of his twin brother Achille, Poirot lures the Big Four into a trap in their underground headquarters. The novel culminates in a dramatic confrontation where the syndicate is destroyed, though at great personal cost. Throughout, Poirot's methodical deduction and Hastings' loyalty are tested against the chaos and fear sown by the conspiracy.
