The Nature of Truth and Evidence
The mystery revolves around the unreliability of evidence and the subjectivity of truth, as characters like Grodman and Wimp manipulate clues and the public's perception, questioning whether absolute truth can ever be known in criminal investigations.
The Perfect Crime and Detective Work
Grodman's obsession with committing an undiscoverable crime and the subsequent detective efforts parody the genre, examining the intellectual challenge of solving mysteries and the vanity of both criminals and detectives.
Appearance vs. Reality
Characters and events are often not what they seem, from Mrs. Drabdump's grim demeanor to the seemingly saintly Arthur Constant's hidden complexities, and the final revelation that the detective himself is the murderer.
Justice and Injustice
The book critiques the legal system through the wrongful arrest and near-execution of Tom Mortlake, highlighting how public opinion, class bias, and flawed evidence can lead to a miscarriage of justice.
Humor and the Grotesque
The narrative blends dark humor with sensational crime, using comic characters like the poet Denzil Cantercot and the cobbler Peter Crowl to undercut the horror, as noted in the introduction's defense of mixing comedy with mystery.
Love and Betrayal
Romantic relationships, such as Tom Mortlake's engagement to Jessie Dymond and Arthur Constant's betrothal to Lucy Brent, are entangled with jealousy, suspicion, and betrayal, driving the plot's emotional conflicts.
The Role of the Public and Media
The public's fascination with the mystery, the press's sensationalism, and amateur detectives' theories satirize how media and mob mentality shape perceptions of crime and guilt.
